When it connects you have to make your phone/tablet cast to the detected WiFi AP (the Streamer). First you have to disconnect fro m the 'normal' WiFi and connect to the Streamer WiFi. With Miracast, the Streamer will mirror the Android device I was using - but it did not "cast" through Apps. I couldn't figure out the DLNA - I have a media server on my network and it never appeared. (The instructions that come in the box are very very poor in clarity and in minute print size.) Once this is done, you have to manually switch between Miracast and DLNA mode - it isn't clear when you would pick one over the other or why. Non-techies would struggle with this concept of setting up a WiFi network within a home WiFi network.
